Early Life & Family

 King was born in conservative methodist family, the daughter of Betty a Housewife, and Bill Moffit a fire-fighter.
  Her family was athletic. Her mother was excelled at swimming, her father played basketball, baseball and ran track. Her younger brother Randy Mowffit, became a major league baseball pitcher, pitching for 12 years  in the major legues for the Sun Francisco Giants, Houston Astors and Toronto Blue jays. 

  King also excelled at baseball and softball as a child. She switched from softball to tennis at age, 11., because her parents suggested she should find a more 'ladylike' sport.

  She buy her first racket at 8$ by own saved money.





Battle of the Sexes

In 1973, king defeated 55 years old Bobby rigs in an exhibition match.
[Bobby Rigs had been top Men's player in both the amateur and professional ranks. He defeated Margaret Courts, who won grand slam titles than anyone (24 titles). Previously, Kings had rejected challenges from Rigs, then avcepted a lucrative financialoffer to play him for $100000, winner take-all.

Match took place at the Houston Astsodome in Texas on September 20, 1973. In front of 30,492 spectators and a television audience estimated at 50 million people (US) and 90 million in 37 countries, 29 years old King beat the 55 years old Rigs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.


Career

King's triumph at the french open 1972 made her only the fifth woman in tennis history to win the singles title at all four Grand Slam Events, a "career grand slam", she also won an mixed doubles. 
King's won a record 20 career titles at Wimbledon. 6 in singles, 10 in doubles and 4 in mixed doubles.

King was an indicator of her mental toughness in grand slam singles tournament was her 11-2 career record in deuce third sets. And that were tied 5-5 before being resolved.

King was becoming the first and only player to completed The triple Crown at Wimbledon. (Winning the singles, women's doubles and Mixed doubles titles in the same year.)

Awards and Honours

○ King was the first associated Press female Athlete of the year in 1967. 
○ In 1972, King became the first tennis player to be named sports Illustrated Sportsman of the year. She was also the first female athlete ever to receive that honour. 
○ King was introduced into the International Tennis Hall of fame in 1987.
○ Life magazine in 1990 named her one of the "100 most Important Americans of the 20th century."
○ King's friend Elton John wrote the song "philadelphia freedom" a nod to her world tennis team for King.
